About this product

Ragi is milled on stone rather than steel because stone runs cooler, and a cooler mill keeps the natural oils in the grain. That is the difference between flour that still smells of ragi after two months and flour that smells of nothing after two weeks.

Looking after it

Because this is stone-milled and unblended, it goes rancid faster than commercial flour. Refrigerate it in the monsoon months.

What we check before a product is listed

Four things we do not compromise on, because a handmade product is judged on all of them.

No preservatives in food
Pickles are cured with oil and salt, not vinegar and stabilisers. Bakery is dispatched within a week of baking.
Azo-free dyes in textiles
Reactive and natural dyes only, printed and dried in shade so the colour bonds to the fibre instead of sitting on it.
Cure times are respected
Six weeks for cold-process soap, four weeks for pickle, three weeks for lemon. Shortening these is how a handmade product is made to look handmade.
Batch-tested where it matters
Honey, ghee and spices are tested for adulteration before packing, and the report is available on request.

Why does it say three months only?

Milled grain retains its oils, and oils oxidise. Commercial flour keeps longer because the oils are stripped out along with most of the nutrition.
