Sahyadri Women’s Collective

The collective farms about nine acres of shared hill land, growing ragi, foxtail and little millet with almost no inputs beyond seed and compost. What they do not grow, they buy from neighbouring women farmers at a floor price they set themselves.

They bought a stone mill in 2019. Milling to order instead of in advance was the single biggest change: it is the difference between flour that keeps for two months and flour that keeps for six.

A nutrition programme run with the local anganwadi means the group also supplies certified millet flour to supplementary feeding centres.
