Fourteen of the twenty-eight members learned to use a sewing machine inside the group. The first hundred totes were rejected by a buyer because the handles were not reinforced — the group unpicked every one and stitched them again rather than let a bad batch leave.

That batch became their quality standard. Every tote now carries a stitched label with the name of the woman who made it.

The group has a standing order from two temples and a college for jute conference bags, which pays the electricity and rent for the work shed.
