About this product

Urad dal soaked overnight, ground to a stiff dough with rock salt and asafoetida, then rolled one at a time and laid out to dry in the sun. The thickness varies slightly from papad to papad because a hand rolls them — that variation is why they puff properly on a flame.

What we check before a product is listed

Four things we do not compromise on, because a handmade product is judged on all of them.

No preservatives in food
Pickles are cured with oil and salt, not vinegar and stabilisers. Bakery is dispatched within a week of baking.
Azo-free dyes in textiles
Reactive and natural dyes only, printed and dried in shade so the colour bonds to the fibre instead of sitting on it.
Cure times are respected
Six weeks for cold-process soap, four weeks for pickle, three weeks for lemon. Shortening these is how a handmade product is made to look handmade.
Batch-tested where it matters
Honey, ghee and spices are tested for adulteration before packing, and the report is available on request.

Are these the thin ones or the thick ones?

These are thick, roughly 1.5 mm, which is what makes them roast well on a direct flame. The moong papads are thinner and better fried.

How many papads in a pack?

About forty, though the count moves a little because they are rolled by hand rather than punched out.
